Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has been an obsession on mine for a little while now, much to my husband’s horror. I started off using it on my skin and in my hair, but have since found a number of other benefits and uses for this wonderful (somewhat smelly) vinegar.
Even though it sounds rather disturbing, you want ACV that says “with the mother”, is unpasteurized, raw, organic, and unfiltered. Braggs is definitely my favorite brand (and you can get it at a great price from Vitacost).
1. For extra soft and shiny hair
Mix 2 tablespoons ACV with 1 cup cold water and pour through hair after shampooing several times a week. No need to rinse it out, once your hair dries it won’t have any vinegary smell, but it will be soft and shiny.
2. Regulating the pH of your skin (and also helps with acne prone or trouble skin)
1 tablespoon ACV mixed with 2 tablespoons water. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and use as a toner across your whole face and neck. A little dab of ACV can also be left on your skin overnight to help reduce age spots and sun spots.
3. Soothes sunburns
Add 1 cup ACV to your bath and soak for 15-20 minutes to relieve discomfort from sunburnt skin. You can also gently massage some apple cider vinegar directly onto the affected area.
4. Balances your entire body system
ACV helps the body maintain a healthy alkaline pH level. Try adding a teaspoon to your water and sipping it through morning or afternoon.
5. Help with detoxing
On top of helping with balancing pH levels in your body, ACV also creates an overall detoxification of the body. Research has also shown that it can help to stimulate cardiovascular circulation and help with the detoxification of the liver.
6. Great for your lymphatic system
ACV helps to break up mucous throughout your body and cleanses the lymph nodes. Research suggests that apple cider vinegar can help with allergies for this very reason, through the reduction of mucous and sinus congestion.
7. Helps with upset stomach
ACV has antibiotic properties, try mixing 1 teaspoon with 1 cup of water and sipping slowly.
8. Apple Cider Vinegar is said to aid in weight loss
Add 1 tablespoon to 20 ounces of water and sip throughout the day. Although research is not conclusive, there is data that suggests ACV offers some significant weight loss benefits if taken on a regular basis. There are also studies that show ACV aids in the lowering of triglycerides (which contribute to the bad cholesterol we want to avoid).
9. Regulate blood sugar
Apple cider vinegar is full of acetic acid, which slows down the digestion of simple carbohydrates, and therefore regulates blood sugar levels. This anti-glycemic effect of ACV has been proven in several studies.
10. Chemical-free All-Purpose household cleaner
1 part water, 1 part ACV, 4-5 drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix in a spray bottle and use as a cleaner throughout your house.
